Is There a Bad Time to Go?
The good news is that Hawaii is a year-round destination, and you can island hop in any month. The weather stays warm and the flights between islands run every day of the year. That said, each season has its own feel, its own crowds, and its own prices, so the best time to go really depends on what you want out of your trip. A little planning around the seasons can help you save money, dodge crowds, or catch something special like whale season.
Winter: Big Waves, Whales, and Peak Crowds
Winter, roughly December through March, is Hawaii’s busiest and priciest season, especially around the holidays. It is also one of the most exciting times to visit. This is humpback whale season, when thousands of whales gather in the islands, and the North Shore of Oahu and other exposed coasts see famous big-wave surf. Winter can bring more rain, particularly on windward and mountain sides, but the tradeoff is green landscapes, waterfalls, and whales just offshore. If you island hop in winter, book flights and hotels early, since demand is high.

Spring and Fall: The Sweet Spots
For many travelers, the shoulder seasons of spring (April to May) and fall (September to October) are the sweet spot for island hopping. The weather is warm and generally drier, the crowds thin out after the winter and summer rushes, and prices on flights and hotels often dip. With fewer people, inter-island flights and popular sights feel more relaxed, which makes hopping between two or three islands smoother. If your dates are flexible, these months are hard to beat.
Summer: Calm Seas and Family Travel
Summer, from June through August, brings warm, dry weather and some of the calmest ocean conditions of the year, which is wonderful for snorkeling and boat trips. It is a popular time for families since kids are out of school, so expect fuller flights and higher prices again, though usually not quite at the winter holiday peak. Booking your inter-island flights ahead of time keeps your multi-island plans on track during this busy stretch.
Match the Season to Your Trip
The right season comes down to your priorities.
- Want whales and surf, and do not mind crowds? Choose winter.
- Want good weather, thinner crowds, and better prices? Aim for spring or fall.
- Traveling with kids in summer? Book early and plan around the calm seas.
Whichever season you pick, the islands are close together and flights are frequent, so hopping between them stays easy all year.
